Professor Brett Mitchell (AM) is an internationally recognised researcher in the area of infection prevention and control.

Professor Mitchell has extensive clinical experience as well as strong academic and research skills, with over 150 peer reviewed journal and oral conference presentations. He has authored several books, and has been an invited speaker at numerous infection prevention and control conferences in Australia and internationally.

Professor Mitchell has been the recipient of several awards, including:

  • A Member of the Order of Australia for his contributions to nursing and infection prevention and control (2024).

  • Commonwealth Health Ministers award for Excellence in Health and Medical Researcher (2023)

  • Induction into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame (2023)

  • Peter Doherty award (top ranked NHMRC Investigator grant) (2022)

  • Research Australia Health Services Researcher of the Year (2022)

Brett is a Fellow of the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control and the Australian College of Nursing. He is Editor-in-Chief of Infection, Disease and Health, an Australian-based, international, peer-reviewed journal on infection and prevention and control.

Professor Mitchell has experience leading nursing teams, research teams and infection prevention and control teams in both Australia and the United Kingdom. These roles have included a Clinical Nurse Consultant, Nurse Unit Manager, Assistant Director of Nursing and Executive Director. He has worked in hospitals, public health, government advisory and academic positions.

Professor Mitchell has had a major influence on the infection prevention and control agenda in Australia through his committee roles at such as the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC), and with the  NHMRC.
